A double-shot of racing for the Michigan Asphalt Modifieds Presented by Howe Racing Enterprises kicks off the 2024 season. Owosso Speedway hosted a full field of Modifieds for their season opener on Saturday, while Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway brought in familiar faces for their first Saturday of racing this spring.
20 cars rolled from the grid on Saturday at Owosso Speedway for the first event of the 2024 season. Kyle Smith and Terry Frost led the field to the green cloth, but it wasn't long before Jackson, Michigan native, Aaron Taylor took the top spot. Making passes in the second groove, Taylor put his No.22 to the top spot just ten laps into the contest. The rest of the race was about keeping Tim Lahar behind him. Coming from 7th and 8th respectively, Taylor and Lahar held the top two spots for the remaining 40 laps of the 50 lap event. David McManus simply ran out of laps coming from 13th to settle for third. Fred Cumming, Jr, and Nick Clemens rounded out the top five.
At Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway, nine cars took the green flag while 12 cars were on the property. Tom Rutherford came from 11th to take the win in the 30 lap feature. Lon Putnam settled for second and Dayton Zink third. Tyler Heeney and Cody Hall completed the top five.
Modifieds take the weekend off at Springport Mid-Michigan Speedway, however, a busy weekend awaits the division. They'll return to Owosso Speedway on Saturday night 24 hours after Corrigan Oil Speedway in Mason, MI opens the gates for the first time in 2024, one season after being all-but-closed in 2023.
