Muskegon, MI (Tuesday, May 11, 2021) - As the 2021 season begins to heat up, more and more tracks have opened their gates to racers and fans alike. For those that started early, their already racking up pretty good statistics, including in the win column. At Thunderbird Raceway, an exciting field of cars lined up for 25 laps around the tight race track on Michigan’s westside.
Dona Marcoullier came from the 10th starting spot and only needed one caution flag to find victory lane Saturday night. Eric Spangler and Mike VanderMark, Jr led the field to the green flag. Spangler jumped out to the early lead, putting a sizable distance between himself and VanderMark. A stout field followed him that included Logan Nickerson, Brandon Thirlby, and Marcoullier.
The caution flag flew near the halfway point of the race when Kyle Borgman got into the turn one and two wall just ahead of the leaders. On the restart, Marcoullier lined up on the inside of VanderMark in the Deleware Style Double-file restart. By the flagstand, Marcoullier had edged ahead of the leader, Spangler and completed the pass going into turn one. The lead was short-lived though as Spangler led a three-wide charge to the line with Nickerson on his inside and Marcoullier on the outside. Spangler held the lead again through turns one and two, but Marcoullier fired another slide-job into turn three - the winning move for the Houghton Lake native.
Marcoullier held on for the win, his second of 2021 while Thirlby raced his way up to second. Nickerson rounded out the podium with Greg Gokey taking his Scott & Pam Phillips Motorsports number 50 to fourth place, while Spangler fell back to fifth.
Next up for Thunderbird Raceway is a full show featuring an IMCA Modified Special paying $1,000 to win. Plus Late Models, Pro Late Models and other divisions racing this Saturday night. Log onto www.ThunderbirdRacewayMI.com for more information and find Thunderbird Raceway on Facebook.
