Lakeville, IN - One of short track racing's most recognizable faces who doesn't drive a car is preparing for a massive change at the end of the year. Irish Saunders, an over 40 year veteran with Hoosier Racing Tire, announced on Thursday that he would be stepping away from the tire sales business and begin focusing on his family and other racing adventures.
According to Saunders, his journey with Hoosier Racing tire began in the summer of 1976 working part time for Bob and Joyce Newton (Hoosier Racing Tire co-founders). In 1981, Saunders says he began working for the company full-time and 43 years later, Saunders says he is filled with gratitude and pride for what he and his customers have accomplished together.
"First and foremost, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to the racers, tracks, and promoters who bring this sport to life. Without your dedication, passion, and commitment, none of this would be possible. To the distributors and dealers who have represented Hoosier Racing Tire over the years, thank you for your partnership and tireless efforts in ensuring our products reached racers across the country and beyond.
One of the greatest honors of my career has been the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most talented racers in the history of motorsports. While there are far too many to name, know that each of you has left an indelible mark on me. Supporting you and being a part of your success has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my time at Hoosier.
I am incredibly proud to have been part of the remarkable growth of Hoosier Racing Tire. This company is more than a workplace; it is a family built on passion, innovation, and resilience. The relationships I have built with employees over the years have been some of the most meaningful in my life. I have learned so much from all of you, and I am eternally grateful for the camaraderie and support that made every challenge worthwhile."

While Saunders didn't mention any specific reasons for stepping away from Hoosier Racing Tire, one moment looms large on the minds of many. In October, word got out that Saunders had been physically assaulted after an event in Indiana and was taken to a nearby hospital. While Saunders was treated for minor injuries, it's not known at this time if the assailant was apprehended.
"Working in the racing and motorsports industry has been a dream come true. There is truly no other sport that matches its passion, both from the fans and the participants. I will always cherish the memories and experiences I’ve had in this unparalleled community.
Although I am retiring, I won’t be a stranger. I look forward to spending more time with family and friends and continuing to enjoy the sport I love. You can be sure that you will see me at a racetrack near you—as a fan, a supporter, and a lifelong advocate for racing.
Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey. It has been an honor and a privilege."
