500 Sprint Car Tour to Visit Owosso Speedway 2025

Press Release

The 2025 racing season for the 500 Sprint Car Tour will see the series visit two facilities that it previously had not been to. One of those will be the historic Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan. The first trip to Owosso Speedway will be paired with a return to Kalamazoo Speedway as part of a doubleheader weekend for the series.

Originally designed as a ½ mile dirt track, Owosso Speedway opened in 1939 as a ¼ dirt oval before shutting its doors during the motorsports ban from World War II. The facility was used as an encampment for German Prisoners of War from North Africa during the war. When racing resumed, the ½ mile course was completed and became known as the World’s Fastest ½ Mile Dirt Oval. Over the years, the Speedway would reconfigure between dirt and pavement before a revitalization in 1988 turing the track into a ⅜ mile pavement oval. Heading into its newest phase of operation, Owosso Speedway was purchased by Rex and Sarah Wheeler at the conclusion of the 2022 season. The Wheeler family continues to invest into the facility and dramatic improvements have been, and will be made for the 2025 racing season.

“Owosso Speedway management is very excited to bring our race fans such a Great Race,” said Rex Wheeler - Owner Owosso Speedway.  “The 500 Sprint Car Tour puts on fabulous racing which will have our race fans on the edge of their seats!”

The 50-lap event at Owosso Speedway will be one of the highest paying events on the 2025 schedule. The event will boast a purse with a total payout of $35,800. At $800 to start and $7,500 to win, the event will surely be a major attraction for both drivers and fans. The last time non-wing pavement sprint cars competed at Owosso Speedway was on July 5th, 1982. The winner of the 25-lap event was Marvin Carman, who is also a two time Little 500 winner (1982 & 1983).

“Rex Wheeler and his team have put an immense amount of work and energy into transforming Owosso Speedway,” said Jared Owen - 500 Sprint Car Tour Series Director. “The Michigan fan base for the tour has been very strong since the series’ inception in 2022. We are excited to visit the eastern part of the state and show the fans what non-wing sprint car racing is all about!”

The 500 Sprint Car Tour is a competitive, non wing pavement sprint car series that has been competing since the Spring of 2022. The series is based out of Anderson, Indiana and sanctions some of the largest non winged pavement sprint car races in America. In 2024, the series averaged 19 entries per event and saw a Championship Battle come down to the final race of the season. With some of the biggest names in all of short track racing, the competition level is high week in and week out.

The 2025 500 Sprint Car Tour schedule will see nine points races starting in early April and coming to a close in mid October. The 77th Annual Little 500 will once again be a non-points earning event for the series, in its traditional Memorial Day Weekend slot.
